Unlike oil change lights or wiper fluid lights, the check engine light is a little vague. That’s because it turns on in response to the computer telling it to, and the computer is connected to hundreds of sensors throughout your car. Your engine and fuel system are lined with these sensors, so whenever a sensor there detects something out of normal parameters, it sends a code to the engine. The engine logs the code and then turns on the check engine light, which is why diagnosis is so important.
